The Story behind The Wheel of Fortune

After being in solitude and meeting The Hermit, The Fool comes back into society. He has changed greatly since the solitude, and now has no expectations from the world. However, The Fool has an extremely lucky day. When passing a water wheel, a woman gives him a drink and then insists he keep the golden cup he drunk out of. Then he compliments a man’s sword and the man insists he keep it. Lastly, The Fool passes a wagon and, by one of the wheels, the man from inside it gives him a bag of gold because he promised he would give it to the tenth person who passes, who happens to be The Fool. He can’t believe his luck today.

Meaning of The Wheel of Fortune Tarot Card

The Wheel of Fortune Tarot Card is very different to most of the other twenty cards in the Major Arcana (excluding The Fool). This card is related to the unknown and the more spiritual aspects of life. There are certain things that happen but we don’t really understand why. For example, one might get exceptionally bad fortune and another might get exceptionally good fortune, even though both will probably be completely unaware of why their luck as fallen like that. It’s much like spinning a wheel, the outcome could be any of the options that are offered on the wheel.

While it may be possible to influence the wheel, it is something that people will never fully understand. The wheel also shows that everything is a cycle and that change is inevitable, no matter how long it takes to come. In short, it shows that destiny and fate are often difficult to fully understand and control.
