The tarot originated around five hundred years ago. Believe it or not, it was not used by mystics until during the 1700s. The tarot originally had a number of different names including trionfi and tarock. A pack of tarot cards consists of seventy-eight different cards. Tarot cards were originally used for playing card games, some of which became popular in Northern and central Europe along with horoscopes.
Tarot is a word used by the English and French, and was derived from the Italian word “tarocchi”. The original roots of that word are unknown. There are many different types of tarot card decks. Each deck is made up of 4 suits, and each suit has 14 cards. The main suits are cups, coins, batons and swords; although some of these suits are often named differently. For example, the coin suit is sometimes known as the “disk” suit. That makes up 56 cards in the deck, the rest of the cards are made up of a trump suit of 21 cards and one other card. The final card is known as the “fool”.
What is a trump suit? The cards in the trump suit work by “trumping” or taking precedence over any of the cards in the deck that are not in the trump suit. The “fool” card is often seen as the most significant in the entire deck, the one that trumps all other cards.
What cards are in the trump suit? There are 21 cards in the trump suit, you may be familiar with some of these if you’ve ever looked into tarot reading before. Here are the cards: The Emperor, The Empress, The Magician, The Hierophant, The High Priestess, The Chariot, The Lovers, Strength, Justice, The Hermit, Wheel of Fortune, Death, The Hanged Man, Temperance, The Tower, The Devil, The Sun, The Moon, The Star, The World and Judgement. In a way, The Fool can be seen to be part of this suit; it takes precedence over all others and was not part of the original 4 suits.
Where can you get a tarot reading done? There are a number of different places you can go for a tarot reading. You might be surprised to hear that you can even do them yourself. The only issue with reading your own cards is that it can be very difficult to look at things from a neutral or objective perspective. You can go to see someone who specialises in reading tarot cards, often referred to as fortune tellers. Alternatively, an increasing number of people are going online for tarot card readings. There are both free and paid options available online.
Types of tarot card readings. There are two different types of readings: open readings and question readings. Open readings, as the name suggests, are much more general. Open readings may cover a more general part of your life. An example of an open reading is career or health. You may be moving into a new job and want to get a tarot reading about your future career path. You can rarely focus on a more specific area with an open reading.
A question reading involves addressing a certain question that you have regarding a particular aspect of your life. It is important to remember that the question cannot be too specific, because you won’t be able to find the answer. If you already know the answer to the question, then your mind has been made up before you have even received the tarot reading. Try to find a happy medium with regards to the detail, and try to stay objective yet positive during the reading.
How you interpret and use the tarot card reading is entirely up to you. Don’t let the reading alone make your decision. Rather, if you decide to use the information from the reading, use it as a loose guide for your decision making.
